Following the success of its Social Inclusion project BASIS, developed and managed by Art in Partnership, Barrhead Housing Association formed a partnership with Linstone Housing Association for a new Wider Role project. ‘Creative Inclusions’ was funded by Communities Scotland’s Wider Role Fund and the art programme coordinated by Art in Partnership. The programme ran from November 2008 - March 2009.
Following on from the BASIS project, Creative Inclusions aimed to use art as a catalyst for social change, improving the sustainability of local communities in areas of East Renfrewshire, and now Renfrewshire, where this practice has been less developed. This was achieved through artist-led workshops that encouraged personal self-confidence and esteem, the acquisition of new skills and assisted in creating a positive public profile for the groups involved.
Dunterlie Arts Group in Barrhead were joined by service users of Causeway (Renfrewshire Association for Mental Health) to work on ‘Jewellery-making on a Budget’ workshops with artist Karen Kiehlmann, followed by digital photography workshops with artist Janie Nicoll. Two groups of young people from Linwood worked with artists Andrew Low and Kathleen Little on film projects looking at the young people's response to regeneration of the area.
The outcomes from the workshops in Barrhead will be shown alongside those from the ongoing Big Lottery workshops at an exhibition at Eastwood Park Theatre, Giffnock, East Renfrewshire on 14 June 2009.
