The highly successful BASIS project developed and managed by Art in Partnership for Barrhead Housing Association in East Renfrewshire has been awarded a grant of £139,107 from the Big Lottery Young People's Fund to provide a programme of activities from 2008-2010. The Young People's Fund is a grant programme to help young people aged 11-25 learn new things and take part in healthy and positive activities that make them feel good about themselves.
Four local groups of young people have been identified to benefit from artist-led workshops. Artist Jan Nimmo is exploring a variety of arts and craft activities in a range of mediums with young people from the Monday Night Group who have a variety of special needs. Artist Jilli Blackwood is working with 10-14 year olds from the Neilston Girls Group exploring issues of identity through fashion and textiles. Artist Jane McInally is exploring public transport issues and their effects on the 12-18 year olds in the Youth Action Group. Work with the fourth local group of young people who’ve had homelessness issues is due to start later in 2009.
In addition to the workshop programme an ambitious community book project has been commissioned. Simon Grennan, of the international artist duo Grennan and Sperandio, is working with pupils from St Luke’s High School in Barrhead to collect the personal wisdom of local people in order to create an almanac, or year-book, The Wisdom of Barrhead and Neilston which will be distributed as a gift to every household in the area in June 2009. Work on The Wisdom of Barrhead and Neilston is supported and documented by artist Kathleen Little.
An exhibition and screening showcasing the outcomes from the workshop programme and officially launching The Wisdom of Barrhead and Neilston will take place on June 14 2009 at Eastwood Park Theatre, Giffnock, East Renfrewshire. An event celebrating The Wisdom of Barrhead and Neilston is taking place at Arthurlie House, Barrhead, East Renfrewshire on June 20 2009.
