Art in Partnership has been appointed by Motherwell College to manage a commission for an artwork for the plaza of its new campus at Ravenscraig. The campus is the first major development on the former Ravenscraig steelworks site in North Lanarkshire.
Due for completion in October 2009 the development includes teaching, workshop, residential and nursery facilities, designed by architects Building Design Partnership (BDP). The heart of the college’s new campus, the plaza will be an open public space situated between two key buildings that will function as the social space.
An open invitation and subsequent limited competition managed by Art in Partnership generated an enthusiastic response from almost 100 including local and international artists.
In March 2009 the selection panel invited Oliver Barratt from a selected short-list to go forward to commission stage. Oliver’s proposal for an illuminated bronze and steel permanent, site-specific artwork reflecting the aspirations of the college, its staff and students will be installed in September.
