Art in Partnership have been appointed by Skanska to commission integrated artworks across NHS Scotland’s new State Hospital. The artworks form part of the new facility’s ‘Recovery’ themed programme to provide of an environment for patient rehabilitation. Skanska have been awarded the £65 million project to construct the new facility which began in March 2008 and is set for completion in 2011.

NHS Scotland’s The State Hospital in Carstairs, South Lanarkshire, helps patients with a mental disorder who must be cared for in conditions of high security that cannot be met elsewhere. To ensure patients are treated in accommodation appropriate to their needs and in an environment that supports rehabilitation, the existing facilities are being replaced.

The new facility will cover an area of 19,000 square metres in addition to the refurbishment of some existing buildings and significant landscaping of the 60-acre site. It will house departments for psychiatric and somatic healthcare as well as facilities for therapeutic, vocational and physical activities.
