Sculpture at Tyrebagger

Sculpture at Tyrebagger is a programme of contemporary artworks specially commissioned for an area of Kirkhill Forest and the adjacent heathland, Elrick Hill, just outside Aberdeen.

Sculpture at Tyrebagger was initiated by Art in Partnership and Forest Enterprise and the first sculptures were installed as part of a pilot project in 1994. In 1996, Art in Partnership developed a three-year programme and made a successful application to the Scottish Arts Council National Lottery on behalf of Forest Enterprise. This allowed the development of a second phase to take place. Installation began again in 1999, extending the project onto Elrick Hill, owned by Aberdeen City Council.

Art in Partnership continued to curate and manage a programme of commissions, residencies, workshops and events until 2001, after which several additional commissions have been completed by the Tyrebagger Trust and its funding partners.

Sculpture at Tyrebagger is now firmly established as a major cultural destination for visitors to the North-East, a unique local amenity and a major educational resource, allowing schools and colleges first hand experience of sculptures by artists, many of whom have national or international reputations.

Artists were invited to create works that would respond to the immediate area and to the North-East in general. These sculptures encourage visitors to look afresh at their surroundings, to consider the relationship between nature and culture and increase awareness and concern for the environment.
