M8 Art Project

The M8 motorway was built in incremental stages between 1967 and 1973. Since then, a long term programme of significant environmental improvements to the M8 corridor has been implemented, including tree planting and upgrading of the surrounding woodlands and landscape. Working alongside these initiatives, the M8 Art Project was devised by Art in Partnership in 1992 to radically transform the motorway through the creation of a series of major artworks and arts-led environmental improvements.

The M8 Art Project Steering Group was established with representatives from the Scottish Office, Scottish Enterprise, the Scottish Arts Council, seven local authorities and five Local Enterprise Companies throughout the Central Belt.

In 1993, Patricia Leighton's 'Sawtooth Ramps', sponsored by Motorola, marked the start of the M8 Art Project. Other projects soon followed, including the 80 foot high 'Horn' by Matthew Dalziel and Louise Scullion, sited in Polkemmet Park, that transmits recorded music, poetry and prose, and David Mach's 'Big Heids' commissioned for the Eurocentral Terminal site.

Since its origination, the M8 Art Project has attracted the support of not only the key organisations within the public sector throughout the Central Belt, but also several multi-national and national companies and some of the principal environmental and conservation organisations operating within the region, giving the M8 Art Project a scale, impact and originality never before seen in Britain or Europe.

The M8 artworks featured on BBC2's The Culture Show on June 10th 2008.
