As part of a major refurbishment programme for Edinburgh’s City Chambers, home to the city’s councilors and Lord Provost, City of Edinburgh Council appointed Art in Partnership to assist in the commissioning of new windows for the main public staircase.
Glass artists Bridget Jones and Douglas Hogg were commissioned to design the new windows which were installed in November 2008. The new windows join stained glass windows commissioned for the stair between 1936 and1996. Bridget’s new window sits beside a window she designed for the City Chambers in 1996.
The Princess Royal visited the City Chambers on January 21st 2009 and unveiled a plaque commemorating the restoration, also commissioned from Bridget Jones.
Both artists’ window designs take inspiration from Edinburgh in the late 18th century, a significant time in Edinburgh’s history, during which the City Chambers was built. Completed in 1976, John Adams’ design for the City Chambers is part of the Classical Edinburgh designed and built in this period while cultural, intellectual and scientific ideas and collaborations were taking place in the Scottish Enlightenment.
Both designs feature the thistle in recognition and continuation of Sir Robert Maule’s request that the murals commissioned for the Main Chamber, for which he presented money in 1904, contain the emblem of the thistle.
